Foustanella

Foustanella is a characteristic costume in South and Central Greece. As a type of dress it can be found in most mountainous areas where often the fabric is made of wool rather than cotton. Foustanella is the pleated skirt of the costume which is made of approximately 350 triangles called langiolia. In older times it used to be longer (knee length) . The waistcoat is called fermeli and is kept closed with a special piece of jewelry called kiousteki. This picture shows a typical costume of Central Greece.
