Pirpiri

Pirpiri is a wedding dress from Yanenna, Epirus. Pirpiri is the name of the coat and is one of the most elaborate of the Greek Costumes. The coat is heavily decorated with gold or combination of gold, silver and silk cords. The technique used is known as couchwork. The pirpiri in this photograph was made in 1793 - a very similar coat, probably made by the same craftsman, exists in the museum of Folk Art in Athens.
